David R. Bruce

Associate Professor

School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation

Research Supervisor SED1114 – Introduction to Sustainability GNG5140 – Graduate Design

Dr. Bruce is a multidisciplinary engineer whose technical work is centred in clean energy materials development and production. With over 25 years of academic and industrial R&D experience in hydrogen fuel cell and electrolyzer systems design, solar materials development and innovative metal-air battery design his efforts are now focused on manufacturability of these materials and devices.

In tandem with this clean-energy development pipeline Dr. Bruce has pioneered a telepresence technique for remote access to virtually any learning environment. Using the Surrogate Avatar Experience (SuAvE), students from around the world have received hands-on training in uOttawa facilities. The current focus for further development in this research path is expansion to additional global facilities while we examine how science is taught and understood through the relational spaces of our students.

Dr. Bruce employes a wide variety of pedagogy in his classrooms and research labs and embraces a Students-as-Partners (SaP) model for how we can better connect with the personal side of learning. Nested in a philosophy of John Dewey’s experiential learning models and bell hooks ‘Teaching to Transgress’, Dr. Bruce believes the boundaries of Engineering should grow to adopt a more holistic model. He is keen to further explore liberal arts, post-humanism and AI engagement for how we better understand our own lived experiences.
