Hussein Al Osman
Full Professor
School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation
Hussein Al Osman received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Ottawa in 2014. He is a member of the Multimedia Computing and Distributed and Collaborative Virtual Environments Research Laboratories and leads the Multimedia Processing and Interaction Group. His research interests include the application of artificial intelligence to affective computing and biomedical engineering. In particular, he focuses on developing multimodal affect recognition methods using deep artificial neural networks to estimate facial expressions and speech sentiment. He studies remote physiological signal measurement using video signals and applies this technology to biomedical and human–computer interaction (HCI) applications. He also conducts research in HCI, particularly in developing serious games for physical rehabilitation and education. His research has been funded by public organizations (e.g., NSERC and NRC) and private collaborators, resulting in over 80 peer-reviewed articles, two patents, and several technology transfers to local and international companies.
